Confined Space (+Gas Testing & Breathing Apparatus) Course
Confined Space (+Gas Testing & Breathing Apparatus) Course info:
The Confined Space course has been designed to give trainees both the theoretical and practical knowledge and awareness of Confined Space Planning, associated Hazards and Entry, including:
- Confined space restrictions, and their effect on patient recovery in the event of incident.
- Methods of entry and exit into confined spaces.
- Types of gases that can be found in common Confined Spaces (e.g. sewer’s, tank’s, silo’s, trenches).
- Suspension Trauma, and its effects on the human body.,
- Duties of Safety Personal, and the risks associated with these tasks.
- Isolation of Confined Space Hazards (lockout tags) vs Minimisation (use of PPE and Breathing Apparatus)
- Equipment associated with Confined Space (CS) work, it’s use and maintenance.
- The need for a rescue plan whenever working in CS, and the basic requirements that must be covered in these rescue plans.
During initial phase of the course the trainee will develop an entry plan. Following the theoretical elements of the course, trainees will then move into the practical exercise to implement their plan developed in the initial phase.
The practical component of the course covers the visual checking of the Confined Space (externally) to ensure that the written plan that the trainee has developed will work in the practical environment. The trainee with then check for safety, fit, and work in a Confined Space harness; design and set up a basic method of making entry to and exit from a Confined Space; Gas Test the environment; then finally make a safe entry and exit from the Confined Space.
Course Aim: To obtain the knowledge necessary to plan and conduct a safe confined space entry, understanding the associated hazards with confined spaces, setting-up and working within a Confined
Space safely - understanding the differences between Gas Testing, and Gas Monitoring.
The course is specifically written to include the contents of Unit Standard/s;
17599 -Plan a Confined Space Entry
18426 -Demonstrate Knowledge of Confined Space Hazards
Elective Unit Standards (a fee may be charged to register these extra credits)
3058 -Perform Gas Testing in an Energy or Chemical Environment
25044 -Wear and Operate Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (BA)
Benefits: Industry feedback following such training clearly identifies improved safety standards among employees working within Confined Space environments. Work-rates have also notably improved with employees having a better knowledge of their Confined Space equipment and its limitations, and therefore having a greater trust in their equipment. When an employee trusts their equipment, they naturally can concentrate more on their task at hand, improving productivity.
Confined Space (+Gas Testing & Breathing Apparatus) Course Duration:
2 complete days. 8am - 5pm (extra 4 - 8 hours will be required for BA Training, numbers dependent)
Prices: Pricing for the Confined Space course will depend on whether Government funding is available in support of the costs to industry participants. If additional funding is available the trainee must provide proof of either being (1) a citizen of New Zealand, Tokolau, Nuie, Cook Islands or Australia (Birth Certificate, Passport or Statement of Whakapapa is required); or (2) a permanent resident of New Zealand (Residency stamp displayed in a Passport or Letter of Residency issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service).
Funding can not be provided if trainee is enrolled in secondary school or if another government organization is paying for the course on behalf of them e.g. Work and Income.
The exact cost of the course varies in different regions of the country. Costing will be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Please note: That should all trainee(s) be eligible for funding they will be enrolled on a Polytechnic course. If any of the trainee(s) are not eligible for funding or choose not to supply the required proof of citizenship/residency they will be charged based on a full rate advised at the time of negotiation. All other trainees will still be enrolled with the polytechnic.
